Achilles Tendon Pain & Ankle Instability/Sprain

Pain in the Achilles tendon, called tendinopathy, is a common foot and ankle injury usually caused by tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon) or tendonosis (small tears in the tendon caused by overuse). Tendonosis is more common than tendonitis, but both cause similar discomfort.  When you sprain your ankle, the ligaments in your foot are weakened. If you rush back into activity before the injury is properly healed, the problem can escalate and result in increasing instability.  Chronic ankle sprains and a feeling that your foot rolls outward too easily are indicators of ankle instability, which often begins with an ankle sprain that didn’t heal correctly.

Metatarsalgia & Neuroma

Metatarsalgia, characterized by inflammation of the ball of the foot due to overuse, is a condition that can make physical activity painful.  Usually a symptom of other conditions, metatarsalgia is often found to be caused by neuroma, which is a painful foot condition affecting the front of the foot and often extending to the toes.  Neuroma refers to any swelling of a nerve, and a Morton’s neuroma is excessive tissue formation around sensory nerves at the base of the second and third, or third and fourth toes. Fibrous tissue forms in response to nerve irritation from pressure exerted by ligaments, causing swelling, inflammation, pain and numbness in part of a toe or toes. As ligaments compress the nerve, the body’s natural reaction is to form excess tissue. This excess tissue causes more irritation and compression on the nerve, often making the condition and pain worse.

Plantar Fasciitis & Stress Fractures – Two Common Foot Injuries

Inflammation of the main structural ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot is called plantar fasciitis. This foot condition is often very painful from the heel to the base of the toes. While it can be caused by excessive running or walking, it can also be caused by certain diseases.  Another common foot and ankle injury is stress fracture, usually caused by high impact activities like basketball or wearing inappropriate footwear resulting in the painful microscopic reorganization of bone.

Corns, Calluses, Ingrown Toenails & Heel Spurs

Corns and calluses are hard, thick patches of skin that develop when pressure is repeatedly applied to a specific area of the foot. These are our bodies’ response to uneven pressure or friction on an area of skin. Ingrown toenails develop when the nail grows into the skin of the toe instead of over it, cutting the nail bed and causing pain, redness and bleeding. Heel spurs, also referred to as ‘heel pain’ or ‘plantar fasciitis’, are often caused by faulty biomechanics – how you walk and move. Heel spurs develop when too much strain is placed on the heel bone, ligaments or nerves.
